Some of the fastest-rising names in popularity are thanks to pop stars…but so too are the fastest fallers. Zendaya, the one-named singer and actress, most definitely deserves credit for the rise of her name, which shot up a whopping 420 spots in the charts this year to 892. Ariana, like Ariana Grande, sits at 37—up from 54 in 2013. And rock fans are probably to thank for the remarkable rise of Axl, like Axl Rose, which jumped 624 spots this year to 850, making it the second-fastest riser of the year. They also probably helped Hendrix, like Jimi, which climbed 199 spots. But perhaps more notable is the negative effect some pop stars have had on their names’ popularity. The biggest faller of the years was Miley, no doubt a nod to Miley Cyrus. The name entered the list in 2007 at 278, peaked in 2009 at 189, but in 2014 sat at 793. Britney, which was 137 in 2000, fell off the top 1,000 entirely, landing at 1,154—making it the third biggest dropper of the year. And Rihanna, which peaked at 312 in 2008, also fell off the top 1,000 list.

Been noticing a lot of Holdens and Eloises in the sandbox lately? Names from classic children’s books and novels have been heating up, perhaps because parents have such fond memories and associations with these popular characters from their own youth. On the boys’ side, Holden (for Catcher in the Rye’s Holden Caulfield), Atticus (the heroic father and lawyer Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird), Rhett (of Gone with the Windfame), and Sawyer and Finn (the last names of popular Mark Twain heroes Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn) have all been climbing the charts.
For girls, our eyes are on Matilda (from the Roald Dahl classic), Frances (the full name of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’s Francie Nolan), Eloise (from Kay Thompson’s popular series about a young girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel), Josephine (the full name of Little Women’s Jo March), Amelia (from the children’s series Amelia Bedelia), Alice (of Wonderland), and Charlotte (the kind spider in E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web). Take a look at this chart to see how these literary namesakes have been trending over the past six years.
There’s no question that the oldest Kardashian sister, Kourtney, bears responsibility for the rise of Mason. Mason Dash Disick, Kourtney’s older son, was born December 14, 2009. Since his birth, the name Mason has shot up from number 34 in 2009 to number 12 in 2010 and then all the way to number 2 in 2011. Today it sits at number 3—pretty impressive! Kourtney’s daughter, Penelope, was born July 8, 2012. Penelope climbed the name ranks from 168 in 2011 to 125 in 2012, and it rocketed to 42 in 2014. (Its variant Penny is on the rise too, entering the top 1,000 in 2013 and jumping to 808 in 2014.) In 2015, Kourtney gave birth to her third child, baby boy Reign Aston. While Reignisn’t in the top 1,000 names yet, it’s totally on trend with its royal undertones. Look for it to hit the list soon. All eyes will be on another Kardashian when Kim gives birth to her second child at the end of 2015. While her first daughter’s name, North, hasn’t hit the list yet, we expect it (and the nickname Nori) to arrive soon.
The first Star Wars film was released in 1977, but the names from the series are getting new life—perhaps due to the release of the most recent film, which came out at the end of 2015. It seems hard to believe that many parents would want to name their little ones after Darth Vader, but the name Anakin had a huge rise in popularity this year, moving up from 1,258 in 2013 to 957 in 2014. Luke rose from 34 to 28, and Leia, which came back into the top 1,000 in 2006 (its other two appearances were in 1978 and 1980, no doubt due to the film), rose to 509 in 2014, its highest rank yet.
In May 2013, actor-couple Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum welcomed their first child, Everly. The popular celebrity duo most definitely inspired other new parents—the name Everly catapulted up the charts in 2013, jumping from 905 in 2012 (its first year on the list) to 380. In 2014, it climbed another 202 spots to 178. The variant Everleigh also made moves, debuting in the top 1,000 in 2014 at 871 and climbing up the ranks to 716 in 2014.
Spanish-speaking culture has had a significant impact on baby names. Hispanic Americans make up the second-largest population group in the United States, and these demographics are reflected in a number of 2014’s biggest jumpers. The fastest-rising name for girls—jumping an incredible 3,625 spots!—was Aranza, likely influenced by the young character on the Spanish-language telenovela Por Siempre Mi Amor as well as the popular Mexican singer of the same name. On the boys’ list, Neymarsailed from its 703 debut in 2012 to 648 in 2013, then up another hundred spots in 2014—most definitely the doing of Brazilian soccer player Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, who more commonly goes by only his first name.
There was perhaps no bigger pop culture phenomenon in 2014 than Frozen, the animated blockbuster that hit theaters in November 2013 and became the highest-grossing box office animated film of all time. So it’s no surprise that Elsa, the name of the film’s Snow Queen, reigned supreme. The name had never broken the top 500 until 2014, when it rose from 528 to 286. Variants like Elsie (from 365 to 336) and Eloise (336 to 300) rose as well. Elsa’s sister, Princess Anna, another favorite, had a more popular name to start. It only moved up one spot, from 35 to 34.
There is no monarchy on American soil, but that doesn’t stop some parents from wishful thinking! Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their son, Prince George Alexander Louis, in July 2013, and the name made an immediate jump. Georgerose from 158 to 134 from 2013 to 2014, while Louis rose from 315 to 289. Alexander was already well regarded and stayed steady at number eight. In May 2015, the royal couple welcomed a daughter, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte made its first appearance in the top 10 in 2014 and will likely continue to rise now that the name has an adorable royal namesake. Elizabeth fell out of the top 10 to make way for Charlotte, falling to 14 in 2014, and Diana continued its decline in 2014, landing at number 297 from 271 in 2013. We expect to see a quick turn of fortune for the name, which sat at number 90 in 2004.
But it’s not only names out of Kensington Palace that are getting the royal treatment. Three names on the rise this year? Royal, King, and Prince. The boys’ name Royal debuted at 900 in 2013 and shot up 327 spots to 573 in 2014. King jumped from 193 in 2013 to 175 in 2014 (its variant Kingston rose from 191 to 161), while Prince climbed from 451 to 412 (variant Princeton climbed from 636 to 517). Duke, the royal rank just below Prince, also had a big couple of years: it debuted on the boys’ list at 720 in 2013, and this year sits at 666. (Bill and Giuliana Rancic, whose son goes by Duke, probably helped too!)
Lots of names are popular for both boys and girls, but they’re generally more popular for one gender than the other. Here’s a list of names that appeared on both the boys’ top 1,000 and the girls’ top 1,000, plus how they ranked in 2014 for each gender. Some interesting finds here—Hayden and Charlie, once in the top 100 for boys, are now given to nearly the same number of boys as girls. Lennon, relatively new to the top 1,000 for both genders, is also almost equally distributed. And the sky is the limit for Skyler, sitting at 302 for boys and 352 for girls. We’d suggest that 2016 will be a great year for Kyle to hit the girls’ list.
You may find it surprising, but only seven of the names in the top 1,000 girl baby names for 2014 start with a W: Wendy, Whitney, Willa, Willow, Winter, Wren, and Wynter. At the same time, you probably won’t find it surprising that the most popular letter that girls’ names start with is A (177 of the top 1,000), with M as a close second with 105 names. Among the boys’ names, 100 start with J, and A names comprise 97 of the total 1,000 names. In 2009, every single letter in the alphabet had at least one boy and girl name, as Unique hopped back on the chart (929) for the first time in four years. But in 2014, no U names made it on the girls’ list. (The boys, however, are covered, with Uriah, Uriel, Urijah, and Ulises). And there was only one Q (Quinn) or X(Ximena) for girls.
Americans loved tuning into the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia—and it showed in the year’s baby names! The fastest-rising name of the year on the boys’ side was Bode, like Bode Miller, the most successful male American alpine ski racer of all time. His name raced an incredible 645 spots to 783 in 2014, from 1,428 in 2013. Variants Bodie (which climbed 333 spots to 981) and Bodhi (which climbed 192 spots to 615) also had great years. Even Boden climbed to enter the top 1,000 this year at 992. Other names got a similar Olympic boost: Mikaela, like eighteen-year-old gold-medal skier Mikaela Shiffrin, rose from 616 to 573. Sage Kotsenburg, the first-ever gold medalist in men’s snowboard slopestyle, inspired a rise in the name Sage on the girls’ and boys’ sides. For boys, it jumped from 725 to 654; for girls, from 458 to 388. Other naming inspiration came from athletes Noelle Pikus-Pace, the silver-medal winning skeleton racer, and Gracie Gold, the bronze medalist figure skater. Noelleclimbed from 296 to 251 and Gracie from 166 to 162.
Ever met a Daenerys, Cersei, or Tyrion? You might soon! The popular HBO series, Game of Thrones, based on the novels by George R. R. Martin, is a pop culture phenomenon with a legion of loyal fans—and unusual names! The TV show premiered in 2011, and in 2012, the name Arya—also the name of one of the series’ most popular characters—shot up from number 714 to 412. In 2013, it flew another 135 slots to 278, and in 2014 it landed at 216. Variants of Arya are on the rise too: Aria rose from 91 in 2012 to 40 in 2013 to 31 in 2014, and Ariya debuted at 918 in 2013 and rose to 828 in 2014. While the popular character Margaery Tyrell, with its uncommon spelling, hasn’t inspired any namesakes in the top 1,000, the more common spelling, Marjorie, debuted at 912 in 2013 and rose to 721 in 2014. The actress who plays Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia Clarke, is another name inspiration. Emilia climbed from 205 in 2013 to 164 in 2014, while Khaleesi (the fictional title given to her character) debuted on the list this year at 755. But plenty of names from this fantasy world are still off the radar. Try Cersei, Melisandre, Sansa, Shae, Talisa, or Daenerys for girls, or Tyrion, Jorah, Tywin, Bran, Eddard, or Lannister for boys, and your little one will have a unique—but on trend!—name.
Do you love hearing other baby names? I do! It gives me inspiration for the future and helps me remember why I gave my children the names they have. I keep a running list of my favorite baby names, but I wanted to know what other moms are actually naming their kids.
